DeWALT Heavy Duty 1/2" Corded Drill (DWD215G)

While cordless drills have become increasingly popular on the job site, corded drills still remain indispensable, particularly on heavy construction sites. Essentially it comes down to the issue of power versus convenience. On a jobsite you need a constant stream of maximum power without the downtime of charging batteries. DeWALT has recently come out with two new 1/2" drills that will be of specific interest to contractors, carpenters, electricians, plumbers and other trades people.

The DW215 comes in two handle styles, both with anti-slip, soft grips - a mid-handle grip (DW215G) and a piston grip (DW210G). I much prefer the pistol grip, as I find it offers excellent balance. At 5.2 pounds, the DW215 is about average for a 1/2" drill. The weight of the tool is centered over the top of the hand. Corded tools tend to be heavier than cordless models, so you really want one that doesn't put a strain on your wrist and forearm when using it for extended periods of time. The reversing switch is conveniently located abreast of the trigger. At the rear of the drill is a thick rubber protective pad. Also of note is the thick reinforced electrical cord.

What you don't see with this drill is the addition of 40% more copper in the motor winding, which results in a drill that will give you around 50% more power, greater torque, and faster speed. With a 10 amp motor delivering 0-1,200 RPM, this is one of the speedier drills on the market. I also like that it offers trigger activated variable speed. Most 1/2" drills seem to offers speeds in the 0-850 RPM range. Great for the workshop, but on a work site where there is a constant push to move the job along you'll appreciate that extra 400 RPM.

Another welcome feature on the DW215 is the durable, all-metal keyless ratcheting chuck with an automatic spindle lock. This is a brute of a chuck that will likely withstand anything that it comes in contact with. The spindle lock is super quick to use one handed, and it holds bits in place like nobody's business. Right behind the chuck is a lovely metal gear housing - no plastic material here. Which is, of course exactly what you want for optimal jobsite durability and reliability. Finally, there is a 360° locking side handle, which you can quickly rotate to any convenient position.

I drilled 1 1/2" holes through 2 x 4 lumber and 3/8" holes into concrete like a hot knife going through butter. The overall appearance and feel to the DW215 is one of durability and reliability. This is a workhorse drill built to withstand the rigors of any job site. Coupled with a 3 year warranty and 1 year of free service, you'll definitely want to put this one on your short list.
